The Martha’s Vineyard concert series will once again host live music on the island with a special free show on Tuesday evening July 20. “Sonic Revolution at the Loft” will feature local artists such as Rose Guerin, Willy Mason Band, the Phil daRosa Band and more at the island’s largest nightclub, The Loft in Oak Bluffs.
The music will continue at the Loft every night this week, leading up to the Beach Road Weekend Three Music Nights at Vineyard Haven with more. and Tedeschi Trucks Fireside Live. The Martha’s Vineyard Concert Series recently partnered with The Loft and invested over $ 100,000 to upgrade the club’s sound and lighting systems. Sonic Revolution will be the newly renovated club’s first live show.
Sonic Revolution will begin at 8:15 am with a special solo performance by Mike Benjamin. The music continues as her daughter Charlotte Rose Benjamin returns home for a special performance. Then, Willy Mason and his group take over followed by a performance by the Phil daRosa Band. Finally, the island’s favorite independent rocker, Rose Guerin, completes the evening.
Not just a wedding singer, Mike Benjamin is the lead singer of Martha’s Vineyard. Although Mike and his band perform at numerous weddings, his vocal talents far exceed the white wedding tents of the vineyard. He has performed and worked with music greats such as Bob Weir, James Taylor, The Blues Brothers, Carly Simon, Patti LaBelle, The Dave Letterman Band, and as the frontman and lead guitarist of the popular New Brunswick hit band. England Entrain.
Charlotte Rose Benjamin is a pink eye shadow wearing a New York girl who writes songs about not having all the answers. Born and raised in Martha’s Vineyard, Charlotte began playing original music as a teenager in local venues and performed regularly in New York City. She is now back on the island after releasing a new EP in June.
With a sound reminiscent of and with the cynicism of grunge and punk, no one could believe the tongue-in-cheek singer / songwriter Willy Mason was only 19 when he appeared on the indie scene. Thanks to the success of his first album, Mason toured the world, but felt a return to the island. Now he still plays at the best clubs in New England, but returns home to the island whenever he can. Mason is about to release his new album, “Already Dead”, in August.
Phil daRosa is a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and engineer / studio owner based on Martha’s Vineyard. Phil has been recording and writing for over 20 years and has shared the stage with many amazing artists including; G. Love, Carly Simon, Chad Stokes, Martin Sexton, Rhymefest, John Forte, Johnny Hoy, Ben Taylor, Ryan Montbleau and many more. He is currently working on new music which will be released in 2021.
Rose Guerin was born and raised in the vineyard before moving to Washington, DC in her twenties. There she joined the indie-folk alternative rock group Vandaveer, and toured the country with them. Guerin has since left Vandaveer, and she’s back on the island, but she still makes music. She was featured on Ringo Starr’s latest album, “Give More Love”, and is a staple of Vineyard clubs.
The shows are presented through a partnership between MV Concert Series and The Loft. The Loft will undergo a six-figure renovation of sound and lighting systems funded by the Martha’s Vineyard concert series, bringing a theatrical experience to one of Oak Bluffs’ best hangouts. Sound engineers will map the room and create a system specially designed to bring professional gigs to the Loft. While much of the interior will look the same, the place will have a new professional sound that transforms the whole experience.
In addition to “Sonic Revolution at the Loft,” the series will feature weekend pre-concert nights at Beach Road with the Neighbor on Wednesday July 21 and Pink Talking Fish on Thursday July 22.
