Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore again questioned Nigerian police about the arrest, detention and continued ill-treatment of Glory Okolie, 21, illegally detained for about 70 days.
Glory was arrested by the Imo State Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on June 17, the same day she took the 2021 unified tertiary enrollment exam.
Sowore and a group, Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, noted that IRT agents later turned Glory into a maid in their care, washing and cooking for them.
A late statement released by police on Sunday, August 22, through the Force’s deputy public relations officer, CSP Aremu Adeniran, accused Glory of “complicity in the series of deliberate and well-coordinated attacks against security trainings, other critical national infrastructures including INEC offices and assassination of security agents in the south-east of the country “.
He continued: “The suspect, from Umutanza in Imo State, was arrested following ongoing investigations and the implementation of a special operation, Operation Restore Peace, to, among other things, break the information, drugs and weapons supply chain of the Outlaw Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network in the Southern Region -East.
“Police investigations revealed that Gloria Okolie is a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) / Oriental Security Network (ESN) in Imo State who worked closely with a certain Benjamin Uzoma Emojiri alias Onye Army, one of the ESN commanders previously declared wanted by the police for his main roles in the planning, coordination and execution of the attack on the headquarters of the Imo State Police Command and the Nigerian Correctional Service Imo State Headquarters.
“His arrest and the revelations of his confession helped police stop Onye’s army, a major step forward in the quest to restore law and order in the Southeast region.
Sowore, however, said on Sunday that it was “obvious that this belated press release was designed as a ruse to cover up some police atrocities!”
He noted that if Glory was as dangerous as the police claimed, “why was she detained and used as a beast of burden to cook and help police wash their clothes at Tiger Base in Owerri, Imo?” ”
He said: “FreeGloryOkolie: After using Glory Okolie as a beast of burden, abused by Nigerian police officers and illegally detained for more than 70 days, and realizing that the world has learned about his illegal detention and his abuse by police officers, the police IGP caused the publication of this “scary” press release to demonize Glory Okolie. The first questions to the IGP are:
“Why was she detained and used as a beast of burden to cook and help the police wash their clothes at the Tiger base in Owerri, Imo if she is so dangerous?
“Why not deliver this release since his arrest 70 days ago?
“Why has she not been charged in court since her arrest when the law says you are not allowed to detain beyond 48 hours?
“Why was the guy who disclosed his illegal detention also detained? ”
Earlier, Sowore had recounted his experience during his visit to the Nigerian Police IRT in Abuja, claiming that he and one of Glory’s attorneys, Samuel Ihensekhien, were not allowed to see the detainee.
“On Friday, I visited the IRT Nigerian Police offices in Abuja to see if I could visit a 21-year-old woman, Glory Okolie, who was arrested in Imo State and remained illegally detained for 70 days, although I was accompanied by one of her lawyers, Samuel Ihensekhien Jnr, the policeman who met us, their lawyer at the IRT in Abuja did not allow us to see her “, did he declare.
“So on Friday I reported my experience via my Facebook page as below:
“#FreeGlory I have just left the IRT Nigerian Police office in Abuja where Glory Okolie is being held for her alleged friendship with a member of # IPOB. I went in the company of a lawyer, Samuel Ihensekhien, but the police who detained her refused us access so we couldn’t see her, they pretended it was too late to let us visit on a Friday afternoon.
“Miss Okolie, 21, has been in detention for more than 67 days, the police used her as a workhorse during her detention in Imo State where she was held for the first time in the dreadful manner ‘ Tiger Base ‘in Owerri and refused It’s so despicable! AND today the Inspector of Police issued the attached press release and again the Nigerians are being taken for a ride. ”
