Late last year Beirut, (aka Zach Condon, a 21-year old multi-instrumentalist, hailing from New Mexico, yet sounding like a full Balkan orchestra), brought his soulful, eclectic Eastern European inspired music to our shores. We released his critically acclaimed debut album ?Gulag Orkestar? alongside the e.p. ?Lon Gisland? last year, which was followed by a joyous UK live show, leaving us ecstatic, energised, in-love and wanting more.
Beirut returns this year with a Glastonbury appearance, a fast selling-out Koko show and some weird and wonderful European dates in June/July, all of which is preceded by this week?s SXSW showcases and two consecutive nights at Bowery Ballroom in May:
Wed 14th March - Emo's @ SXSW (on-stage 10.30pm)
Fri 16th March - Austin City Limits @ SXSW (on-stage at 7pm)
Sun 6th May ? New York, Bowery Ballroom
Mon 7th May ? New York, Bowery Ballroom
Sun 24th June ? Glastonbury, Jazz World Stage
Tue 26th June ? London, Koko
Sat 30th June ? Turkey, Instanbul Radar Festival
Tue 3rd July ? France, Paris Café De La Danse
Thu 5th July ? Germany, Berlin Postbahnhof
Tue 10th July ? Greece, Athen?s Vrahon Theater
Beirut releases three exclusive downloads through Rough Trade?s digital store (www.roughtrade.com) on Monday 12th March. The three tracks are: ?Monna Pomona?, ?Fountains And Tramways? and ?Napoleon On The Bellerophon?, all taken from the e.p. ?Pompei?, recorded pre ?Gulag Orkestar.?
Beirut is also set to release the single ?Elephant Gun? in June to coincide with his UK shows. Two videos are soon to be shot in LA for ?Elephant Gun?, both directed by Alma Harel: http://www.almaharel.com
After a productive winter spent holed-up in New Mexico with an array of instrumentation and an explosion of ideas, Beirut?s second album is currently three-quarters finished, with the record being planned for a late 2007 release on 4AD.
