CD Review: Favourite Worst Nightmare

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst NightmareThe 2006 debut from these punky, huge-at-home English boys rocked and popped with straightforward brilliance while doubling as a primer on working-class Sheffield nightlife. A bit heavier and not as immediate, Favourite Worst Nightmare is a slightly lesser record, though by no means a Difficult Second Album. The basic stuff is the same as the debut's: momentum, alternately fluid and hard-riffing guitars, and Alex Turner's lithe singalong tunes. Bangers like "Brianstorm" and "505" sound at once ass-kicking and matter-of-fact, and among more tender cuts, the easy winner is the lovely "Fluorescent Adolescent," a snapshot of a wild girl tamed: "You used to get it in your fishnets/Now you only get it in your nightdress." Though unromantic takes on various club-going lads and lasses and their friends are back again, Turner's lyrics are shorter this time around on details that stick, and some cuts are less than memorable. But most of Nightmare sounds confident, unlabored and just plain good -- English cool without English bullshit. The Arctic Monkeys are the new Arctic Monkeys.

Coachella Day Three: Rage On

Tuesday, 01 May 2007
Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine“Good evening,” Zack de la Rocha said on Sunday night, looking out at the 50,000 or so people gathered in front of Coachella’s main stage. “We are Rage Against the Machine, from Los Angeles, California.” With that, guitarist Tom Morello –- wearing a baseball band emblazoned with the word “Unite” — kicked into the winding riff of “Testify,” beginning Rage’s first concert in seven years. De La Rocha rapped with so much force that his microphone distorted as he enunciated every word of the lyrics, which were written about the first Gulf War but sounded eerily current: “Baghdad is burning… The war is right outside your door!”

CD Review: One Man Revolution
Written by admin
Monday, 30 April 2007
The Nightwatchman - One Man RevolutionRage against the machine guitarist Tom Morello pulls a reverse Dylan-at-Newport on his debut solo album by unplugging and writing thirteen songs about how shitty Bush's America is. Backed by acoustic guitar, harmonica and the occasional drums and keyboard, Morello -- recording under the name "the Nightwatchman" -- paints himself as a ghostly figure wandering the country pointing out wrongs, whether they are "Colin Powell's lies" or "dirty scabs" crossing a picket line. On the best song, "One Man Revolution," the Nightwatchman takes us on a trip from the streets of Havana to Los Angeles -- all the while (consciously?) nicking Bruce Springsteen's haunting riff from Nebraska's "State Trooper." Morello's baritone voice is surprisingly expressive, and he even manages to sell potentially cringe-inducing lines like "the Nightwatchman giveth" and "three times I shot the sheriff and did not spare the deputy." Living up to the legacy of Nebraska is tough; Springsteen himself hasn't been able to record a great sequel. Hopefully, for his next album, Morello will get his old band back together and make a Born in the USA.
