CD review: Year Zero

Nine Inch Nails - Year ZeroThe best thing to hit YouTube in the past few weeks is Sad Kermit singing Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt." Everybody's favorite Muppet amphibian strums an acoustic guitar, warbling Trent Reznor's classic ballad of self-loathing to a montage of scenes illustrating his degradation: Kermit shooting up, Kermit passed out in a pile of beer cans and pill bottles, Kermit blowing rails off a copy of The God Delusion near a topless photo of Miss Piggy. By the end of the song, Kermit's going down on Rowlf, who brandishes a leather whip. "You can have it all, my empire of dirt," Kermit sings, and you feel his froggy pain. It works because Kermit and Trent aren't so far apart -- they're both sweet and sad and vulnerable, behind a brittle formal pose. On Sad Kermit's MySpace page, he sings an even bleaker NIN song -- "Something I Can Never Have" -- but I don't know if I'm strong enough to take that one.

Pixie: Introducing Pixie!
Friday, 04 May 2007
Pixie Lott has always had a strong passion for music and soulful singing and wants to bring it to those who share the same passion. At a young age she has always known what she wanted to become, and is overwhelmed by the opportunity she has been given. At 11 she gained a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts to further her skills of singing, dancing and acting. She has had experience on the television for the BBC, and the West End stage. She is 15 years of age and in June 2006 was signed by L.A Reid at Island Def Jam Records in New York. She is in the process of recording her first album, hopefully to be released later this year. She is enjoying songwriting, playing the piano and co-writing some tracks on her album. She cannot wait for the release date and live performances - the dream turns to reality.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Part I
Written by krotzyk

Red Hot Chili PeppersRed Hot Chili Peppers are a multiple Grammy Award-winning American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. For the majority of their 24 years as a band, they have mainly consisted of, Anthony Kiedis (vocals), John Frusciante (guitar), Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass), and Chad Smith (drums).

Throughout their career, the band has fused various elements of punk rock, funk, heavy metal, alternative, and rap. They hold the record for most number one singles on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart with 11, and has held a record of 81 weeks at number one.

Inconsistent and unstable lineups have influenced the band's music, style and success throughout the nine studio recordings they have produced. The band originally featured Hillel Slovak on guitar and Jack Irons on drums. After Slovak died of a heroin overdose, Irons resigned, and they were replaced with guitarist John Frusciante and Chad Smith. With the band, Frusciante assisted in propelling the foursome's once turbulent musical career into a successful and popular affair. Their second album together (fifth collectively), 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, has since gone multi-platinum in numerous countries, and become an international sensation selling over 12 million copies, being labeled one of the most influential albums of all time. However, during the process, Frusciante became uncomfortable with the new found success of the band, abruptly parting from the group in the late summer of 1992. The Chili Peppers thus employed former Jane's Addiction guitarist, Dave Navarro for their subsequent album, One Hot Minute. Released in 1995, it failed to meet the recognition which Blood Sugar Sex Magik saw, and, as a result, sold roughly 5 million units, less than half of its predecessor; vast creative differences between him and the rest of the band caused Navarro to be fired from the Peppers not long after.

A Rock Festival Whose Hallmark Is Taste
Written by krotzyk

Tens of thousands gathered on Saturday to hear the Arcade Fire, one of dozens of sets at the Coachella festival in California.INDIO, Calif., April 30 — The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival may have to start sharpening its identity.

It began in 1999 as a rock festival with taste — one that made a point of going deep in bringing together the bigger alternative-rock acts with dance music, and particularly bent itself toward white America’s leisure class. And right after the looting and burning at Woodstock ’99, Coachella seemed remarkably safe and conscientiously run.

It still is. And Coachella still has taste, that elusive thing. With 122 different sets across five stages this year, it still managed to go fairly deep into new or cult-music territory. This year’s festival, which ran through the weekend, has grown more than twice as big as it was in the first year, with a third day added and daily crowds of 50,000 to 60,000.

CD Review: Favourite Worst Nightmare
Written by krotzyk

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst NightmareThe 2006 debut from these punky, huge-at-home English boys rocked and popped with straightforward brilliance while doubling as a primer on working-class Sheffield nightlife. A bit heavier and not as immediate, Favourite Worst Nightmare is a slightly lesser record, though by no means a Difficult Second Album. The basic stuff is the same as the debut's: momentum, alternately fluid and hard-riffing guitars, and Alex Turner's lithe singalong tunes. Bangers like "Brianstorm" and "505" sound at once ass-kicking and matter-of-fact, and among more tender cuts, the easy winner is the lovely "Fluorescent Adolescent," a snapshot of a wild girl tamed: "You used to get it in your fishnets/Now you only get it in your nightdress." Though unromantic takes on various club-going lads and lasses and their friends are back again, Turner's lyrics are shorter this time around on details that stick, and some cuts are less than memorable. But most of Nightmare sounds confident, unlabored and just plain good -- English cool without English bullshit. The Arctic Monkeys are the new Arctic Monkeys.

Coachella Day Three: Rage On
Written by krotzyk

Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine“Good evening,” Zack de la Rocha said on Sunday night, looking out at the 50,000 or so people gathered in front of Coachella’s main stage. “We are Rage Against the Machine, from Los Angeles, California.” With that, guitarist Tom Morello –- wearing a baseball band emblazoned with the word “Unite” — kicked into the winding riff of “Testify,” beginning Rage’s first concert in seven years. De La Rocha rapped with so much force that his microphone distorted as he enunciated every word of the lyrics, which were written about the first Gulf War but sounded eerily current: “Baghdad is burning… The war is right outside your door!”

CD Review: One Man Revolution
Written by krotzyk
Monday, 30 April 2007
The Nightwatchman - One Man RevolutionRage against the machine guitarist Tom Morello pulls a reverse Dylan-at-Newport on his debut solo album by unplugging and writing thirteen songs about how shitty Bush's America is. Backed by acoustic guitar, harmonica and the occasional drums and keyboard, Morello -- recording under the name "the Nightwatchman" -- paints himself as a ghostly figure wandering the country pointing out wrongs, whether they are "Colin Powell's lies" or "dirty scabs" crossing a picket line. On the best song, "One Man Revolution," the Nightwatchman takes us on a trip from the streets of Havana to Los Angeles -- all the while (consciously?) nicking Bruce Springsteen's haunting riff from Nebraska's "State Trooper." Morello's baritone voice is surprisingly expressive, and he even manages to sell potentially cringe-inducing lines like "the Nightwatchman giveth" and "three times I shot the sheriff and did not spare the deputy." Living up to the legacy of Nebraska is tough; Springsteen himself hasn't been able to record a great sequel. Hopefully, for his next album, Morello will get his old band back together and make a Born in the USA.
